Baseball Recap: Pine-Richland Drops Highest Score of Season Against West Allegheny

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Pine-Richland). They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the West Allegheny Indians on Tuesday. Considering the Rams have won five contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Drew Boivin looked comfortable as he struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Pine-Richland let Jake Waddell and Tanner Cunningham run wild. Waddell scored a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances, while Cunningham scored three runs while going 2-for-3. Those three runs gave Cunningham a new career-high. Ben Husted also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Pine-Richland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in six consecutive matches.

Pine-Richland pushed their record up to 10-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for West Allegheny, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 3-6.

Pine-Richland and West Allegheny should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Pennsylvania Rankings. The Rams (ranked fourth) will meet Butler (ranked 60th) at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Pine-Richland 2, the Golden Tornado 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, West Allegheny will challenge New Castle at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (156 vs. 354).
