5A Continental recap October 1, 2013
Chaparral and Highlands Ranch played the most contested game in 5A Continental this week, with Chaparral eventually emerging with a 18-17 victory.
ThunderRidge fell to Regis Jesuit 35-12 last week, the largest margin of any game. Steve Ray was a bright spot for the Grizzlies, as he ran for 143 yards in the defeat.
The Raiders' dynamic duo of Matt Houghtaling and Trevor Williams proved to be unstoppable against ThunderRidge, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Houghtaling threw for 171 yards and Williams had 102 yards receiving. Cody Lippert helped Regis Jesuit's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 37 yards.
Bartlett Tomatea made the biggest impact on defense this week as Douglas County bested Mountain Vista. He grabbed 2.5 sacks.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Joe Johnson's team's Brody Westmoreland and Mark Hopper have proven to be a lethal combination. Westmoreland has thrown for 715 yards this season, while Hopper, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 24 catches for 468 yards. The Huskies' Trey Smith leads the league in rushing yards with 710.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between Douglas County and Regis Jesuit. Jeff Ketron's team enters the contest ranked 11th in the state, while Mark Nolan's team ranks sixth.
The Raiders led 5A Continental in scoring this week by notching 35 points on the Grizzlies. Houghtaling ran for 27 yards during the win.
