South Western and Spring Grove are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2018, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will host the Rockets at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
South Western is returning to their home field after beating Dallastown on theirs, despite the fact Dallastown has dominated at home this season. The Mustangs skirted past the Wildcats 5-3.
Jaden Freeze made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run.
In other pitching news, Connor Brennan looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits.
Freeze wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Josiah Floyd, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. That's the most stolen bases Floyd has posted since back in March of 2025. Colby Matthews was another, earning one run and three stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Spring Grove hadn't done well against Red Lion recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. The Rockets walked away with a 6-3 victory over the Lions. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Rockets.
Like South Western, Spring Grove also got a great game from a two-way player: Luke Husser. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Husser was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI.
In other batting news, Brandon Bechtel was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Spring Grove's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-6 when he doesn't).
South Western's win bumped their record up to 6-3-1. As for Spring Grove, their victory bumped their record up to 4-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. South Western has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Spring Grove struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
South Western beat Spring Grove 4-0 when the teams last played back in March. Will the Mustangs repeat their success, or do the Rockets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
