MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) Chargers have officially been named to the 14th Annual MaxPreps Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its eighth year honoring girls soccer.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for 100 of the top teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For soccer, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 34,000 competing varsity teams, this puts the Chargers ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
In order to be eligible, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a state championship. Beating Murray 2-1 in the
UHSAA Class 5A state championship contest on Friday, October 19 marked the completion of an incredible 18-2 season — and earned Corner Canyon an invitation to the Tour of Champions.
After driving into the box and coercing a foul, Megan Astle opened the title game's scoring with a penalty kick. Then, before you could blink an eye, Maryn Granger headed in Kenli Coon's corner kick, scoring what proved to be the winning goal. Up 2-0 15-minutes into the contest, Corner Canyon was well on its way to winning the school's first girls state soccer championship at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy.
The Spartans fought back and cut the deficit in half on a Sydney Wilcken goal, but the runners-up could get no closer. Corner Canyon attempted six corner kicks and was whistled for eight fouls, while Murray took five corner kicks and was called for 10 fouls.
Corner Canyon opened postseason play with a 4-1 win over East before kicking in the door to the Final Four with a 3-1 triumph over Maple Mountain. The Chargers bumped Skyline from state championship contention with a 4-0 semifinal win to set up the championship bout with Murray.
The Chargers shut out Murray 3-0 to open the season. Then, following a 3-1 triumph over Westlake, Corner Canyon upended Olympus 3-1 to open the season at 3-0. The Chargers reeled off 10 more wins before dropping back-to-back decisions to Alta and Timpview. Krissa Reinbold's club did not lose again and outscored its opposition 77-13. The Chargers posted nine shutouts and held 19 foes to one goal or less, while scoring a season-high 10 goals in a win over Cottonwood. Having won 18 of 20 contests in 2018, Corner Canyon set itself up for some rather high rankings come season's end. Not only are the Chargers ranked No. 1 in
MaxPreps' Utah Class 5A Rankings, Corner Canyon is the second best squad in all of
Utah. The Chargers are ranked No. 50 in
MaxPreps' National Rankings!
These incredible season achievements have earned the Corner Canyon Chargers an invitation to the 14th Annual Tour of Champions. Please join us in the gymnasium for a post basketball game presentation as we celebrate with the girls soccer team, coaching staff, students and fans on Friday, February 8 at 7:00 p.m.
