The Chevak Comets's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their third straight loss. They took a 68-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of Scammon Bay. While losing is never fun, Chevak can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alaska basketball rankings (they are ranked 44th, while Scammon Bay is ranked sixth).
Josiah Sundown was his usual excellent self, scoring 24 points for Scammon Bay. Another player making a difference was Albert Yunak, who scored eight points.
Chevak's defeat dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Scammon Bay, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Chevak will take on Unalakleet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Unalakleet is coming into the game on a four-game losing streak. As for Scammon Bay, Scammon Bay and Hooper Bay will face off at 8:30 p.m. on January 20th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hooper Bay knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight games -- so hopefully Scammon Bay likes a good challenge.
