The Highland Hawks and the Liberty Lions squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but sadly the Highland Hawks had to settle for second. They were dealt a 54-12 loss at the hands of the Lions. Highland's loss signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.
When it comes to explaining why Highland lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jay Martin. Despite the final result, he rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries. Martin's longest rush was for an incredible 75 yards.
Navi Bruzon was his usual excellent self, rushing for 67 yards and three touchdowns, while also throwing for 238 yards and two touchdowns while completing 85% of his passes for Liberty. Braylon Gardner did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 134 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Liberty's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB 6.5 times. The heavy lifting was done by Hudson Dunn and Paz St john who racked up four sacks between them.
Highland's loss dropped their record down to 9-3. As for Liberty, they pushed their record up to 11-1 with that win, which was their seventh straight at home.
Highland does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Liberty will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Centennial at 5:30 p.m. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given how much these teams ran up and down the field in their prior games.
