The Santaluces Chiefs struggled with assists on Monday (the Wellington Wolverines had seven more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Santaluces took a 35-23 hit to the loss column at the hands of Wellington. Santaluces lost against Wellington in their previous head to head back in February, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 54-46 score last time.
Santaluces' loss came despite strong showings from Makaylah Wayde and Lyiah Gaitor. Wayde scored 11 points along with nine rebounds and five steals, while Gaitor scored eight points along with ten rebounds and three blocks. The matchup was Wayde's seventh in a row with at least ten points.
It was another big night for Madison Smith, who scored eight points along with 14 rebounds for Wellington. Smith is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. Rebecca Vital was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with four steals.
Santaluces now has a losing record at 3-4. As for Wellington, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.
Santaluces will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Park Vista at 7:30 p.m. Park Vista and Santaluces are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads. As for Wellington, they will head out on the road to face off against Boynton Beach at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Boynton Beach will be looking to keep their three-game home win streak alive.
