La Porte and South Bend Riley are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Slicers will face off against the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. La Porte hasn't scored more than two runs for four games straight, a trend the team is eager to reverse.
La Porte is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They had just enough and edged out New Prairie 2-1. The win was some much needed relief for the Slicers as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Mia Maxel spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 11 Ks.
At the plate, Shayla Sorg was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Evie Travis, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, South Bend Riley entered their tilt with Michigan City on Tuesday with nine consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with ten. They put the hurt on the Wolves with a sharp 15-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won 12 contests by ten runs or more so far this season.
ELLIANA GONZALES made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with six RBI and two doubles. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, South Bend Riley got a massive performance out of RACHEL HUNT, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base. HUNT is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games she's played. ALEIGHANA CLEMONS was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
South Bend Riley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .697. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
La Porte's record is now 13-16. As for South Bend Riley, their record now sits at 18-9.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. La Porte hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .321. However, it's not like South Bend Riley struggles in that department as they've averaged .347. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
