The Meridian Mustangs were the 61-38 winner over the Shelby-Rising City Huskies when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Meridian opened the new year with a less-than-successful 37-28 defeat to Shelby-Rising City. Meridian has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jaala Stewart, who scored six points along with seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaira Niederklein, who scored six points along with five rebounds.
It was another big night for Taya Pinneo, who scored 19 points for Shelby-Rising City. Another player making a difference was Ava Larmon, who scored eight points.
Meridian has not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season. As for Shelby-Rising City, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season.
Meridian will be staying on the road on Monday to face off against Freeman at 5:00 p.m. on January 8th. Freeman will be looking to extend their current nine-game winning streak. As for Shelby-Rising City, they will head out on the road to face off against Centennial at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nebraska (Centennial is ranked 146th, while Shelby-Rising City is ranked 140th).
