Football Recap: Omaha North Falls Short Against Ranked Kearney

Omaha North faced Kearney in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Vikings were just a hair shy of victory and fell 14-13 to the Bearcats. Despite 121 more yards than the Bearcats, the Vikings couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

Despite the loss, Omaha North still got an impressive performance from Jaron Cannon, who rushed for 125 yards and one TD while picking up 7.4 yards per carry. Cannon's rushing production has been exceptional as that marked his seventh straight game with at least 104 rushing yards dating back to last season. Re'Aire Washington made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.

While Omaha North came up short, they sure didn't make it easy for Kearney: they limited their QB to completion percentage of just 33.3%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from four players: James Harrington, Darion Jones, Washington, and Michael Valencia, who each logged one passes deflected. Omaha North wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 43.5%.

Omaha North didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Kordai Richard and Washington. Washington got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Omaha North's defeat dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Kearney, their record now sits at 3-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Omaha North will venture away from home to challenge Lincoln Northeast at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Vikings will need to watch out since the Rockets have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season. As for Kearney, they are taking a road trip to take on Lincoln East at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Bearcats surely won't give up without a fight.
