After flying high against the Northwest Halifax Vikings on Tuesday, the Roanoke Rapids Yellowjackets came back down to earth. Roanoke Rapids took a 59-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of Northampton County. Roanoke Rapids lost against Northampton County in their previous head to head back in December of 2019, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 81-34 score last time.
When it comes to explaining why Roanoke Rapids lost on Wednesday, one person who can't be blamed is Darren Solomon. Despite the final result, he scored 16 points along with 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. Solomon scored a full 29.6% of Roanoke Rapids' points, the second time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Thomas Shabazz was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with 7 rebounds.
Jiyoun Williams went supernova for Northampton County, scoring 24 points. Another player making a difference was Torrey Harris, who scored 16 points.
Roanoke Rapids' defeat dropped their record down to 2-1. As for Northampton County, their victory bumped their record up to 1-0.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Roanoke Rapids will take on Southeast Halifax at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Southeast Halifax focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 31 on Tuesday. As for Northampton County, they will head out on the road to face off against Wilson Prep at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Wilson Prep's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
