Baseball Recap: Elkhart Starts Season with Victory at Home

Elkhart took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Monday. They blew past the Alto Yellowjackets 15-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory the Elks have posted since March 7, 2024.

Gavin Shirey was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Shirey was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brent Denson, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Coyt Cooper, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.

Elkhart always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .548. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Alto only posted an OBP of .333.

Coming up, Elkhart will take on New Boston in a tournament on Thursday. As for Alto, they will face off against Waskom at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
