The Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles will take on the Nicholas County Grizzlies at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Woodrow Wilson is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Woodrow Wilson took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Margaretta 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Flying Eagles have posted since May 1, 2024.

Tyler Wilhite
03/20/25 vs St. Albans | 4 |
04/12/25 vs Christiansburg | 2 |
Tyler Wilhite was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Woodrow Wilson is 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 4-5 otherwise. Wilhite was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Wilhite wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Drew Gallaher, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Maddex Sims was another, scoring two runs and stealing a base.
Nicholas County not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 20th. They were the clear victors by a 15-2 margin over Oak Hill. The result was nothing new for the Grizzlies, who have now won four matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Nicholas County got a big performance out of Caleb Burns, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. The dominant performance also gave Burns a new career-high in doubles (two). Another player making a difference was Colton Burkhammer, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4.
Nicholas County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Oak Hill only managed five hits.
Woodrow Wilson pushed their record up to 8-7 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Nicholas County, they now have a winning record of 7-6.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Woodrow Wilson hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .318. However, it's not like Nicholas County struggles in that department as they've averaged .312. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Woodrow Wilson suffered a grim 11-5 defeat to Nicholas County in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Flying Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
