Milford High School's Dwight Barbiasz was jumping one moment, and jumping for joy then next.
One week after he set the state record in the high jump by clearing an even 7-feet in the Class L meet, Barbiasz broke his own record with a jump of 7-1 at the Meet of Champions.
"That one meant a lot to me because there's lot of people (nationally) who have jumped 7 feet, but I think there are only five people who have jumped over 7 feet, so to break over that is amazing," Barbiasz said. "I had good speed and I took off in the right spot."
Next up for Barbiasz, a senior who will attend the University of Maryland, is the Junior Nationals in Ohio later this month. He said if he performs well there, he may travel to Poland for the Junior Olympics.
Barbiasz shared the spotlight with Lebanon senior Anna Cioffredi, who won her seventh and eighth individual state titles at the Meet of Champions. She took first in the 200 meters (25.22) and also prevailed in the 400 (5.66 seconds). Her time in the 400 was 0.07 seconds shy of the state record.
Cioffredi, who will continue her track career at Boston College next season, also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x400 relay team.
"I'll really miss it because I've had such a great experience running in high school, but at the same time I'm going on to four or five years of it in college," Cioffredi told the Manchester Union Leader. "So it's not really an end. It's just an end of one chapter."
