4A Region I District 2 recap November 5, 2013
Parkland moved up to 636 from 694 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 4A Region I District 2. The Matadors were able to move up by besting Hanks 49-21.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Canutillo beat Ysleta 20-9. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Eagles.
DAVID ARMENDARIZ threw for 370 yards and 4 touchdowns. He went 20-29 with 0 interceptions.
RAMON RENTERIA was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 172 yards on 23 carries as Parkland beat San Elizario. OMAR ROSALES also contributed to the rushing game with 20 yards on the ground.
The leading receiver in the league this season is Erik Camacho. The Horizon star has 43 catches for 936 yards.
Horizon's Camacho needs only 64 receiving yards against the Indians to crack 1,000 for the season. So far this year, he has garnered 43 catches for 936 yards.
Javier Gomez of the Canutillo is just 50 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 108 carries Gomez has put up 950 yards this year.
One of 4A Region I District 2's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when Eastlake and Jerry Walker's team face off next week. CHRISTIAN JOHNSON has dominated opposing QBs with a total of 14.5 sacks, while ARMENDARIZ has 1,720 passing yards and 18 touchdowns on the season.
Next week's game between the Falcons and the Matadors will feature a good passing match up as ARMENDARIZ will test his arm against JOHN WASCHAK's defensive ability.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Eastlake takes on Parkland. Jay Calderon's team is currently in first, while the Matadors are in third.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Scott Brooks' team takes on the Conquistadores. The Eagles have allowed 71 points this season, while Del Valle has given up 98. Canutillo allowed 9 points last week as it beat Ysleta.
The Eagles fell to the Rangers 47-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.
