West Phoenix came up into this matchup off a tough 56-point defeat on Tuesday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Pan-American by a score of 61-59 on Thursday.
Despite the loss, West Phoenix got top-tier performance from Isaiah Brown, who posted 37 points. That was a full 62.7% of West Phoenix's points, marking the 11th time in a row he's had more than a third of the team's points. Kealin Covington was another key player, putting up 13 points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask East Valley Athletes for Christ). They claimed a resounding 82-30 victory over Mission Heights Prep. The Eagles have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine contests by 22 points or more this season.
West Phoenix better keep an eye on Anthony Sorensen. He was instrumental in East Valley Athletes for Christ's win, going 8 for 13 en route to 21 points along with five rebounds and four steals. The dominant performance gave Sorensen a new career-high in steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Sorensen, who went 7 of 12 on his way to 19 points.
East Valley Athletes for Christ smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in five consecutive games.
East Valley Athletes for Christ is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-3 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 33.3 points. As for West Phoenix, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-10.
West Phoenix took a serious blow against East Valley Athletes for Christ in their previous matchup back in February of 2018, falling 71-39. Can West Phoenix avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
