The Newton County Cougars will square off against the Clinton Arrows at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Newton County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Newton County took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They never let Union get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Yellowjackets: they've now won nine in a row.
Landry Brunson tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Emma Kate Munn and Shae Jimmie did most of the damage at the plate: Munn went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Jimmie went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Hadley Amis was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Clinton couldn't beat Brandon on Tuesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the second inning. The Arrows lost 13-5 to the Bulldogs. The Arrows have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Clinton saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Presleigh Burrow, who went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases and one run. Another was Cailyn Willis, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Newton County's victory bumped their record up to 9-1. As for Clinton, their loss dropped their record down to 6-4.
Clinton's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Newton County has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game.
