The Midwest has a solid hold on the MaxPreps Cup standings after the month of October with teams from Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota holding down the top four spots, led by 2019-20 winner
Carmel (Ind.).
With state championships in boys tennis, boys cross country and girls golf along with nationally-ranked boys and girls soccer teams, the Greyhounds hold a 188-point lead over No. 2
New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.).
Carmel could hold the lead well into the spring as it is the favorite to win boys and girls swimming state championships in the winter. The Greyhounds are gunning for their 10th straight state championship in boys swimming and their 38th straight crown in girls swimming.
New Trier won state titles in boys golf, boys soccer and girls tennis and were nationally-ranked in girls field hockey and boys soccer. The Trevians hold a 50-point lead over No. 3
Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.), which won the MaxPreps Cup in 2022-23 and captured boys and girls cross country and boys soccer so far this year. The Trojans could also add a state title in volleyball later this month.
Noblesville (Ind.), which won state championships in boys and girls soccer and is ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the nation in the two sports, respectively, comes in behind Wayzata with 804 points.
The MaxPreps Cup is a ratings system that attempts to determine the best overall high school sports programs in the nation. The formula gives points for state championships and runner-up finishes as well as placement in national rankings. Points are awarded on a weighted basis, based size of school, size of state, number of schools in an enrollment division and popularity of sport.
Schools are listed with their MaxPreps Cup rating for state championships and national rankings prior to Nov. 5. Not all states have completed state tournament competition for the fall sports season.
