Carondelet is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will head out on the road to challenge the Monte Vista Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. Carondelet is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Last Friday, Carondelet didn't have quite enough to beat Bishop O'Dowd and fell 9-8. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Carondelet got a good showing from Maia Scholtens, who pitched 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
At the plate, Carondelet saw ten different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Myleiana Lopez, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Those doubles marked the first that Lopez hit this season. Another was Kylee Mapes, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Even though they lost, Carondelet kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive matchups.
Monte Vista not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since April 22, 2024. They never let San Rafael get on the board and left with a 7-0 victory.
Kaysi Patel tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. Furthermore, she didn't allow a single earned run, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in March of 2024.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sophia Leyden, who fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted two runs, the most she's had since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Hailey Frantz, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Monte Vista's record is now 3-1. As for Carondelet, their loss dropped their record down to 1-3.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Carondelet has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.5 hits per game. However, it's not like Monte Vista struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.5 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Carondelet was able to grind out a solid win over Monte Vista when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 4-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Carondelet since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
