Basketball Recap: Caroline Fey's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Charlotte Catholic over Butler

If Charlotte Catholic was feeling good fresh off their 59-38 takedown of Garinger last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Charlotte Catholic Cougars took a 50-45 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Butler Bulldogs. The Cougars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Charlotte Catholic lost on Thursday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Caroline Fey, who went 6 for 7 on her way to 12 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Fey a new career-high in points. Megan Shea was another key player, putting up 14 points and eight rebounds.

Butler's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Hannah Moss, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds. With that strong performance, Moss is now averaging an impressive 8.1 boards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Saunders, who posted 19 points along with five assists and three steals.

Charlotte Catholic's defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 7-8. As for Butler, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-1.

Charlotte Catholic and Butler should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. Charlotte Catholic (ranked 158th) will meet East Mecklenburg (ranked 400th) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Charlotte Catholic is coming into the contest hot, having won their last three games. Similarly, Butler (ranked 64th) will meet Independence (ranked 439th) at 6:00 p.m. on January 17th.
