Meanwhile, after a string of four wins, Spring Creek's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell 73-61 to Fernley. Spring Creek has struggled against the Vaqueros recently, as their contest on Saturday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
Spring Creek's defeat came about despite a quality game from Darren Bylund, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 13 rebounds. Jaron Johnson was another key contributor, scoring 14 points.
Elko is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 15-8 record this season. As for Spring Creek, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-6.
Elko won a matchup that couldn't have been any closer in their previous meeting back in January, slipping by the Spartans 48-47. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Bylund, who scored 21 points along with eight rebounds.
