The Crystal City Javelinas are taking a road trip to take on the Cotulla Cowboys at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Crystal City managed to slip by Hondo the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. Crystal City lost 7-0 to Hondo on Tuesday. The contest marked the first time this year in which the Javelinas were not able to get on the board.
Crystal City saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Christopher Mena, who went 1-for-2 with one double. That double was Mena's first of the season.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Cotulla ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They won by a run and slipped past Natalia 4-3.
Frank Torres spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in March of 2024.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Eric Aldaco, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Davyn Deltoro, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.
Cotulla's record is now 2-7-1. As for Crystal City, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-7 record this season.
Cotulla's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Crystal City has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .488. It's a different story for Cotulla, though, as they've only averaged .205. Will they be able to contain Crystal City's hitters?
Crystal City came up short against Cotulla when the teams last played back in April of 2024, falling 6-2. Can Crystal City avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
