Basketball Recap: Mario Cabrera's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Arrupe Jesuit over the Academy

Arrupe Jesuit was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. The contest between them and The Academy Wildcats didn't end well, with the Arrupe Jesuit Generals falling 67-53. If the Generals were looking for revenge after losing 66-46 to them when the teams met back in January of 2022, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Arrupe Jesuit's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mario Cabrera, who posted nine points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Cabrera has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last ten times he's played. Another player making a difference was Manuel Loya, who went 5-for-12 to rack up 14 points.

Cabrera wasn't the only one working in the assist department: Arrupe Jesuit was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive matchups.

Trey Boychuk continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for The Academy, going 9-for-20 en route to 24 points in addition to seven steals and six assists. The Academy is 4-1 when Boychuk posts five or more steals, but 6-9 otherwise. Aydon Austin was another key player, putting up eight points and nine assists.

Arrupe Jesuit's defeat dropped their record down to 12-9. As for The Academy, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-10.

Coming up, Arrupe Jesuit will welcome Prospect Ridge Academy at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Prospect Ridge Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past eight games -- so hopefully Arrupe Jesuit likes a good challenge. As for The Academy, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 64-63 victory against Eagle Ridge Academy on the 20th.
