The Cannon Cougars came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24 points) and they left with even more momentum. They enjoyed a cozy 70-51 victory over Charlotte Country Day School. Given Cannon's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked fifth, while the Buccaneers are ranked 88th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cannon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kierra Morrow, who scored 17 points along with four blocks and three steals. Morrow hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Maya Mccorkle, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Charlotte Country Day School lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Sam Vanderhave, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Margaret Blythe, who scored 17 points.
Even though they lost, Charlotte Country Day School smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cannon only pulled down eight offensive rebounds.
Cannon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season. As for Charlotte Country Day School, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 15-9 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cannon will take on the Knights at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Charlotte Country Day School, they will be playing at home against the Hawks at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
