After a string of three wins, the Avery County Vikings's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell 48-40 to Mountain Heritage. While losing is never fun, Avery County can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 231st, while the Cougars are ranked 42nd).
Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Zoie Mcclarrin, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine rebounds. Reagan Greer was another key contributor, scoring six points along with three blocks.
Avery County struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Mountain Heritage racked up 13 assists.
Mountain Heritage got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Keira Wilson out in front who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds. Wilson is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last six games she's played. Another player making a difference was Lilly Neill, who scored seven points along with nine rebounds.
Avery County's loss dropped their record down to 11-9. As for Mountain Heritage, they pushed their record up to 18-2 with that victory, which was their sixth straight at home.
Avery County will head out on the road to square off against the Patriots at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mountain Heritage, they will be playing at home against the Mountaineers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
