The Avoyelles Mustangs''s 9-4 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They were beaten by Southern Lab 50-8 on Thursday. Avoyelles was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 28-8.
When it comes to explaining why Avoyelles lost, one person who can't be blamed is Zayden Williams. Despite the final result, he rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Southern Lab's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Armariyan Asberry, who rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. Asberry's longest rush was for an incredible 70 yards. Another player making a difference was Marlon Brown, who threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns on only 16 passes.
This is the second loss in a row for Avoyelles and nudges their season record down to 1-7. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 5-3 Holy Savior Menard (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 74.1% over those games). As for Southern Lab, the victory was the fifth in a row for they, bringing their record for this year to 6-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Avoyelles will challenge Rosepine at 7:00 p.m. on October 27th. As for Southern Lab, they will head out on the road to face off against Kentwood at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Kentwood is on a three-game streak of home wins, Southern Lab a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the field.
