The Powell Panthers will square off against the Gibbs Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Powell 2.9, Gibbs 2.3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Powell will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Saturday, then bounced right back against Carter on Monday. The Panthers blew past the Green Hornets 12-1. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten contests by seven runs or more this season.
Langston Coggins spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Powell got a massive performance out of Rianna Boone, who went 4-for-5 with five RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most hits Boone has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Lizzi Lowe, who went 3-for-5 with two triples, three runs, and one RBI.
Powell was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .450. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Carter only posted a batting average of .125.
Meanwhile, Gibbs faced Farragut in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Eagles won by a run and slipped past the Admirals 7-6. Winning may never get old, but the Eagles sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.
Gibbs also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Lacey Keck gave up four earned (and two unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Skylynne Luttrell, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Malyiah Smith, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.
Gibbs' victory was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 29-3. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Powell, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-8 record this season.
