MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Chino Hills (CA) Huskies have officially been named to the 11th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 10th year honoring boys basketball.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For basketball, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with over 40,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Huskies ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
As the 2015-16 season opened up, head coach Steve Balk and the Huskies were recognized as an
early contender and the top team in the MaxPreps California preseason boys basketball
Fab 5. Five months and 35-straight wins later, Chino Hills completed a historic, undefeated season as the
MaxPreps national champion and ranked No. 1 in the state, Division 1, Southern Section, Southern Section Division 1AA and Baseline League.
On Mar. 19 the Huskies defeated Santa Margarita (100-66) to open up the
2016 CIF Southern Section Open Division tournament with their first of eight postseason wins. En route to the state championship, Chino Hills dominated in every aspect of the game as they defeated Sierra Canyon (105-83) for the section championship and Bishop Montgomery (84-62) for the regional title.
On Saturday, Mar. 26 the top-ranked Huskies capped their perfect season (35-0) with a
CIF state open division final win over Concord's De La Salle (70-50) at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. Chino Hills did not start the game in its traditionally dominant ways and at the half the Spartans had a rare 30-28 advantage after taking a 19-9 lead. The Huskies made sure that 2-point lead was short-lived as they opened the second half with a 15-2 run and went on to outscore De La Salle 19-5 in the third quarter. The rest of the game was all Chino Hills.
Huskies senior Lonzo Ball led the team with 15 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and five assists while brothers, LaMelo Ball and LiAngelo added 14 and 18 points, respectively. Junior Eli Scott also scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Chino Hills.
The 2016 CIF open division state champions were overwhelmingly dominant in the postseason that the closest any opponent came was 20 points and the Huskies stunned Santa Ana Mater Dei with a 48-point triumph, which was their largest margin of victory. To top that off, Chino Hills tied the state record and exceeded 100 points in 18 games this season.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Chino Hills Huskies an invitation to the 11th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the boys basketball team, coaching staff, students and fans on Friday, May 20 at 5 p.m. during a community celebration at the football stadium.
