The Coatesville Red Raiders are taking a road trip to face off against the Downingtown East Cougars at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Coatesville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Coatesville came out on top against Henderson on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run fifth inning. The Red Raiders were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Warriors. The win continues a trend for the Red Raiders in their matchups with the Warriors: they've now won five in a row.
Gracelynn Landis spent all five innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on one hit and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Coatesville got a massive performance out of Jillian Wimmer, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Wimmer is on a roll when it comes to home runs, as she's now launched at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Taylor Sherry, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
Coatesville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Henderson only posted an OBP of .167.
Meanwhile, Downingtown East came tearing into Friday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 6-3 victory over the Eagles.
The team relied heavily on Lilly Waterer, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those two runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Baroni, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Coatesville's record is now 14-5. As for Downingtown East, their record now sits at 13-6.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Coatesville hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.8 home runs per game. However, it's not like Downingtown East struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Coatesville skirted past Downingtown East 10-9 when the teams last played back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red Raiders since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
