MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Muskego (Wis.) Warriors have officially been named to the 14th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its fourteenth year honoring football.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for 100 of the top teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For football, only 50 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 17,000 competing varsity teams, this puts the Warriors ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
In order to be eligible, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a state championship. Beating Kimberly 24-21 in the
WIAAWI Division I state championship contest on Friday, November 16 marked the completion of an incredible 14-0 season — and earned Muskego an invitation to the Tour of Champions.
Kimberly may have played its way into a sixth straight state championship contest, but it was Muskego that walked away with the Silver Ball at Camp Randall Stadium, snapping a streak of five straight state football titles for the Papermakers.
After taking a 17-14 advantage at halftime, the Warriors had to rally with Alex Current's 27-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to secure Muskego's first state football title. The Warriors were in position to add more points late, but on a first-and-goal with less than a minute left, Muskego took a knee and ran out the clock. Having qualified for postseason play 19 times, the Warriors fell short in the 1994 Division I state final.
AJ Makinen threw three passes and completed one of them for 13 yards, while Current led the powerful run game with 127 yards and a pair of touchdowns on seven carries. Current also caught the lone completion. John Reiske added a touchdown and 112 yards rushing on 16 carries, while RJ Bosshart carried 11 times for 74 yards. Hunter Wohler led the Warrior defense with 15 tackles, while Sam Chovanec and Mitch Borkovec each had an interception.
Muskego opened postseason play with a 56-7 win over Hamilton/Audubon. Then, following a 56-20 triumph over Kettle Moraine, the Warriors kicked in the door to the Final Four with a 20-3 victory over Franklin. Muskego bumped Marquette University from state championship contention with a 24-21 semifinal win to set up the championship bout with Kimberly. Ken Krause's club opened the season with a 49-14 win over Waukesha North. Then, following a 35-7 upending of Arrowhead, the Warriors knocked off Brookfield East 36-12 to open the season 3-0. Muskego did not drop a decision all season and outscored its opposition 543-181. The Warriors posted a shutout and held nine foes to 14 points or less, while scoring a season-high 63 points in a shutout of Waukesha South.
Having won all 14 contests in 2018, Muskego set itself up for some rather high rankings come season's end. Not only are the Warriors the top-ranked squad in all of
Wisconsin, Muskego is ranked 139th in
MaxPreps' National Rankings!
These incredible season achievements have earned the Muskego Warriors an invitation to the 14th Annual Tour of Champions. Please join us in the gymnasium during the varsity wrestling match as we celebrate with the football team, coaching staff, students and fans on Thursday, January 24 at 7 p.m.
