On Wednesday, the Pickens Blue Flame faced the Westside Rams in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Pickens took a 39-29 hit to the loss column at the hands of Westside. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Pickens has scored all season.
Pickens lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Hannah Campbell, who scored five points along with two steals. Campbell is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ava Owens, who scored five points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Westside's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gervonna Williams, who scored ten points along with five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Williams has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Khalia Hartwell, who scored seven points along with nine rebounds and four blocks.
Pickens' loss ended a 16-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 12-2. As for Westside, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-3.
Pickens will be playing at home against Greenwood at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in South Carolina (Greenwood is ranked fifth, while Pickens is ranked ninth). As for Westside, they will head out on the road to take on Easley at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Easley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 last Wednesday.
