After three games on the road, Canyon is heading back home. They will take on The El Modena Vanguards at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Canyon will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 549th, while El Modena is ranked 154th).
Last Friday, Canyon came up short against Esperanza and fell 34-27.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Kyle Bayle, who picked up 213 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Corin Rynders, who threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, El Modena put the finishing touches on their fourth blowout victory of the season on Friday. They claimed a resounding 38-10 win over El Dorado on the road. El Modena pushed the score to 35-10 by the end of the third, a deficit El Dorado had little chance of recovering from.
It was another big night for Xzavior Guess, who threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes, and also punched in two touchdowns on the ground. Brodie Hitchens was another key contributor, rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown on only 14 carries.
Canyon's defeat was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their overall record down to 1-8. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 14.2 points per game. As for El Modena, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Canyon lost to El Modena at home by a decisive 42-27 margin in their previous matchup back in October of 2022. Thankfully for Canyon, Owen Smith (who rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.2 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
