The Newington Nor'easters fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against Sacred Heart Academy on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the 82-77. Even though they lost, Newington's still made a splash on offense and bumped their average scoring up to 53.4 points per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).
Several Nor'easters players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kendall Miller, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 13 rebounds. Those 19 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Bela Cucuta, who scored 28 points.
Even though they lost, Newington were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Newington's defeat dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Sacred Heart Academy, their win was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-0.
Newington will finish 2023 at home by hosting Hamden at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hamden will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. Sacred Heart Academy will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Edwin O. Smith at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Connecticut (Edwin O. Smith is ranked 15th, while Sacred Heart Academy is ranked 11th).
