5A Region IV District 29 recap October 29, 2013
Winn scaled the state rankings by moving to 761 from 827 this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region IV District 29. The Mavericks were able to move up by beating Laredo LBJ 28-7.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Alexander beat United South 31-14. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
United's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Derek Esparza threw for 354 and 4 touchdowns and Eric Corona had 115 yards receiving. On the ground Esparza chipped in 103 yards. Zachary Williams helped United's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 90 yards.
The Longhorns' dynamic duo of Esparza and Corona proved to be unstoppable against Del Rio, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Williams helped United's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 90 yards.
Alexander's Aaron Swain and Marc Lozoya led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Swain has thrown for 2,153 yards this season, while Lozoya has 48 catches for 1,013 yards. The Panthers' Isaac Cabello leads the league in rushing yards with 703.
One of 5A Region IV District 29's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when Joel Lopez's team and the Wolves face off next week.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Winn takes on United. Eric Villasenor's team is currently in sixth, while David Sanchez's team is in first.
The Longhorns took down the Rams 59-12 last week, the largest margin of any game. Esparza ran for 103 yards during the win.
