Gilroy dropped their record down to 12-5 on Tuesday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Saint Francis Lancers, falling 10-3. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Mustangs, who until this match were averaging 1.88 runs allowed.
Bam Mendoza was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Andrea Alvarez, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.
As for Saint Francis, their victory was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 18-2. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9.8 runs.
On Saint Francis' side, Ava Bulanti made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Bulanti has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in ten consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one home run, two RBI, and one double.
In other pitching news, Saint Francis got a great performance from Mercedes Coller as she struck out eight batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Those eight strikeouts gave Coller a new career-high.
Back at the plate, Peyton Tsao was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. Gabby Rocha was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run.
Gilroy and Saint Francis should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Mustangs (ranked 88th) will meet Leigh (ranked 594th) at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Saint Francis will take on Los Gatos at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with a big rank advantage (5 vs. 195). The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Lancers 1.2, the Wildcats 1.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
