Cape Henry Collegiate is a perfect 9-0 against Peninsula Catholic since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Dolphins will be playing at home against the Knights at 4:30 p.m. Cape Henry Collegiate's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so Peninsula Catholic's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
On Friday, Cape Henry Collegiate was able to grind out a solid win over Cox, taking the game 7-3.
The team relied heavily on Harley Matela, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Meanwhile, Peninsula Catholic had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They put the hurt on Norfolk Collegiate with a sharp 11-2 victory last Tuesday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Knights needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.
Austin Muth was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Those 14 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, Simon Payntar and Aidan Casey did most of the damage at the plate: Payntar got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base, while Casey went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those two doubles gave Payntar a new career-high. Garrett Robison was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Peninsula Catholic was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Norfolk Collegiate only posted a batting average of .208.
Cape Henry Collegiate has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Peninsula Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to 4-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Cape Henry Collegiate has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Peninsula Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Cape Henry Collegiate's way against Peninsula Catholic when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Cape Henry Collegiate made off with a 27-0 win. Will the Dolphins repeat their success, or do the Knights have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
