Scarborough has won 13 straight games at home (dating back to last season), while Thornton Academy has won 13 straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Thursday. The Red Storm will welcome the Trojans at 4:30 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Scarborough is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Biddeford, who was ranked 21st at the time (Scarborough was ranked eighth). The Red Storm sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over the Tigers on Tuesday. The Red Storm haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
Scarborough's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Kam Duggan, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Those two stolen bases gave Duggan a new career-high.
Thornton Academy never got on the board in their matchup on Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Noble on Wednesday. They had just enough and edged out the Knights 10-9.
Jacob Fish made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other pitching news, Ben Indorf tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Thornton Academy let Cam Cyr and Colton Cross run wild. Cyr went 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Cross went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That double marked the first that Cross has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Brennan Tabor, who went 1-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs.
Thornton Academy has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That somehow still isn't as good as their 9-1-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.1 runs over those games. As for Scarborough, their win bumped their record up to 9-0.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Scarborough has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Thornton Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Scarborough took their victory against Thornton Academy when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 9-3 score. Do the Red Storm have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
