The Carterville Lions will head out to square off against the Father McGivney Catholic Griffins at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Carterville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.9 runs per game this season.
Carterville took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They walked away with a 7-4 victory over Harrisburg.
Carterville let Alex Lyell and Parker Poole run wild. Lyell went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Poole went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Camden Wright, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.
Meanwhile, Father McGivney Catholic came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with 14 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against the Knights.
Ty Etcheson led a balanced Griffins bullpen and tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Etcheson has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one hit in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Justin Terhaar and Mason Holmes did most of the damage at the plate: Terhaar went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Holmes went 1-for-2 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Drew Kleinheider, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Father McGivney Catholic's win was their 23rd straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 17-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Carterville, their record is now 10-6.
Both Carterville and Father McGivney Catholic just can't seem to miss. The Lions have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.4 hits per game. However, it's not like Father McGivney Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.9 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance. Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
