After two games on the road, El Monte is heading back home. They will take on the Hawthorne Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in El Monte's favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last four matchups.
With a playoff game on the line, El Monte rose to the challenge on Friday. They managed a 55-50 victory over Bishop Montgomery. Yes, you read that score correctly, and yes, they were playing football.
Brandon Do and Felipe Taboada were among the main playmakers for El Monte as the former rushed for 160 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries and the latter rushed for 328 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 10.9 yards per carry. Do was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 67 yards.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday Hawthorne sidestepped Anaheim for a 22-20 win. The win was just what Hawthorne needed coming off of a 49-0 loss in their prior contest.
Obie Brown was the offensive standout of the match as he threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns while completing 73.3% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Zameere Medina, who gained 81 total yards and a touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Hawthorne's defense and their five sacks. Leading the way was Jonah Gray and his three sacks.
El Monte pushed their record up to 5-6 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 46.0 points per game. As for Hawthorne, their victory bumped their record up to 5-6.
