Sumrall has gone 9-1 against Greene County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Sumrall Bobcats duke it out with Greene County Wildcats at 11:00 a.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
While Sumrall's win against Columbia wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Sumrall came out on top in a nail-biter against Columbia on Friday, sneaking past 10-8. The victory was familiar territory for the Bobcats, who have now won three matches in a row.
Jack Miller and Leo Odom made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Miller tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Odom struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed since back in February. At bat, Miller went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double, while Odom scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4. That's the most RBI Miller has posted since back in May of 2024.
In other batting news, Sumrall got a big performance out of Braelyn Harrison, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Raner, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Greene County, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They blew past Richton 17-5 on Thursday. Considering the Wildcats have won six games by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Sumrall, Greene County also got a great game from a two-way player: Cole Helton. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up just two earned runs off one hit. Helton has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Brody Jones was a standout: he scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Eli Herring, who scored four runs while going 2-for-5.
Greene County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .622. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Richton only posted an OBP of .308.
Greene County is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. Sumrall's victory bumped their record up to 12-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Sumrall has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Greene County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Sumrall's way against Greene County in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Sumrall made off with an 8-2 win. Will Sumrall repeat their success, or does Greene County has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
