Mattoon hasn't had much luck against St. Anthony recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Greenwave will square off against the Bulldogs at 4:30 p.m. Mattoon is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last three games.
On Monday, Mattoon narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Charleston 5-4.

Madden Johnson made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kael Alexander, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple marked the first that he hit this season.
Fans were treated to a battle of the Bulldogs on Monday. St. Anthony's pitcher stepped up to hand Mahomet-Seymour a 5-0 shutout. The victory made it back-to-back wins for St. Anthony.
The result came thanks to Brock Fearday's shutout, as he gave up just three hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Vincent Vogel was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-2. Another player making a difference was Brady Hatton, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Mattoon's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for St. Anthony, their record now sits at 6-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Mattoon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Anthony struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Mattoon might still be hurting after the 12-0 defeat they got from St. Anthony in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Greenwave avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
