The Polk County Wolverines will head out on the road to face off against the Brevard Blue Devils at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Polk County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 268th, while Brevard is ranked 105th).
Last Friday, Polk County took a serious blow against East Rutherford, falling 63-20. Polk County was already down big by the end of the third quarter and they stayed that way after failing to score in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Brevard had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 33.5 points), and they went ahead and made it seven on Friday. They blew past Hendersonville 24-0. The result was nothing new for Brevard, who have now won six matchups by 20 points or more so far this season.
Brevard found their leader in underclassman Benjamin Kessinger, who threw for 134 yards and three touchdowns. Brevard also got a significant boost from Corey Matthews, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 95 yards.
Another reason for the win was Brevard's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for seven sacks. Leading the way was Zion Brown and his two sacks.
Polk County now has a losing record at 4-5. As for Brevard, their victory was their seventh straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 7-2.
Polk County came up short against Brevard in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 31-27. Can Polk County avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
