Henderson County has gone a perfect 10-0 against Union County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Colonels will challenge the Braves at 5:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Henderson County is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Kentucky's top teams: Marshall County, who was ranked 18th at the time (Henderson County was ranked second). The Colonels never let the Marshals get on the board and left with a 6-0 win on Saturday. Winning may never get old, but the Colonels sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.
Maggie Grogan was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Azayah Hall also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Henderson County hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Union County, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They put the hurt on Owensboro with a sharp 15-0 victory on Friday.
Peyton Jenkins looked comfortable as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Sydney Thomas, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Audrey Staley was another key player, going 1-for-2 with three runs and one RBI.
Union County is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-12 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Henderson County, their record is now 26-2.
Henderson County's speedy runners might be the difference in Monday's contest. The Colonels have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Union County, though, as they've been averaging only 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Henderson County continue to outrun the ball?
Everything went Henderson County's way against Union County when the teams last played back in March, as Henderson County made off with a 13-2 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Colonels since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
