Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Apache Junction). They were the clear victor by a 21-1 margin over the Coronado Dons on Thursday. With that win, the Prospectors brought their scoring average up to 6.6 runs per game.
Austin Sherman made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in February of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Apache Junction got a massive performance out of Aiden Deleon, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and one double. Deleon also brought in an RBI, marking his first of the season. Rhett Ruiz was another key player, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.
Apache Junction always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .682. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matches.
Apache Junction moved to 1-4 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak. As for Coronado, they are on an 11-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.
Coming up, Apache Junction will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against ALA - Anthem South at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. Coronado will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Highland Prep West at 3:15 p.m. on March 19th.
