Westside hasn't had much luck against Cesar E. Chavez recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Wolves will look to defend their home field against the Lobos at 9:30 a.m. After the two teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one won't be so lucky on Saturday.
Westside took a loss when they played away from home back in February, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed two weeks ago. They never let Houston Math Science & Tech get on the board and left with a 17-0 win. The Wolves' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Meanwhile, Cesar E. Chavez entered their tilt with Houston Math Science & Tech on Tuesday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 16-0 margin over the Tigers. Considering the Lobos have won six games by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Ava Castillo - 2026 and Ahmani Hawkins - 2027 were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Castillo - 2026 pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Hawkins - 2027 struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Castillo - 2026 has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. At the plate, Castillo - 2026 got on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs and one RBI, while Hawkins - 2027 went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave Hawkins - 2027 a new career-high.
In other batting news, Penelope Hernandez - 2027 and Izarely Almaguer - 2026 did most of the damage at the plate: Hernandez - 2027 went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base, while Almaguer - 2026 got on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those three RBI gave Hernandez - 2027 a new career-high. Daniela Rivera - 2027 was another key player, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Cesar E. Chavez kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.9 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 9.6.
Westside's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Cesar E. Chavez, the win got them back to even at 6-6.
Westside might still be hurting after the 18-0 defeat they got from Cesar E. Chavez in their previous meeting back in April of 2025. Can the Wolves avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
