Basketball Recap: Gateway Charter Academy Takes a Loss

Gateway Charter Academy won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Tuesday. They took a blow against the Village Tech Viper Squid, falling 97-36. While losing is never fun, the Gators can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1434th, while the Viper Squid are ranked 293rd).

Despite the loss, Gateway Charter Academy had strong showings from Trevion Gabriel, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 14 rebounds, and Juliane Lampkin Jr., who went 6 of 14 on his way to 17 points. Gabriel is also crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Bobby Williams, who posted two points and three steals.

Village Tech's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Bryson Gaines led the charge by going 10 of 19 on his way to 26 points and five rebounds. Isaiah Thomas was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 18 points and nine rebounds.

Gateway Charter Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Village Tech, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-2.

Gateway Charter Academy will take on Trinity Leadership in a holiday battle at at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Trinity Leadership's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last three matchups. Village Tech and A Plus Academy will compete for holiday cheer at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
