Rye had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 14-12 victory over the Ellicott Thunderhawks. 14 seems to be a good number for the Thunderbolts as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.
Rye found their leader in freshman Brady Baumgartner, who rushed for 37 yards and two scores, and also threw for 121 yards on six of 17 attempts. The Thunderbolts also got a significant boost from Jackson Bjorum, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 90 yards.
Rye didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Tyson Boisvert.
Rye's victory bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Ellicott, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 4-3.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Rye will square off against rival Buena Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Thunderbolts 10.9, the Demons 10) so any points scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Ellicott is set to challenge their familiar foe Colorado Springs Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
