Mattawan is 0-10 against the Spartans since December of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Mattawan Wildcats will be staying on the road to face off against the Lakeview Spartans at 7:00 p.m. on February 6th. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
Last Thursday, Mattawan came up short against the Lancers and fell 60-48. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Mattawan in their matchups with the Lancers: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite their defeat, Mattawan saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Delaney Elsmore, who scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and three steals, was perhaps the best of all. That was a full 43.8% of Mattawan's points, marking the tenth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Meghan Duell, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds.
Meanwhile, Lakeview suffered a tough 58-38 defeat at the hands of the Maroon Giants on Thursday. While losing is never fun, Lakeview can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 423rd, while the Maroon Giants are ranked 210th).
Mattawan's defeat dropped their record down to 7-6. As for Lakeview, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-11.
Mattawan was taken down by the Spartans 46-18 in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. Can Mattawan avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
