Boy, did the girls volleyball team of
San Francisco Waldorf (San Francisco, Calif.) prove that the spectacular way.
In the initial Northern California Division 6 championship match, the tiny school from the big city pulled off a monumental comeback win 9-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-11, 15-11 on Dec. 2.
It was Waldorf's 10th straight win to close the season, but the previous nine were all by sweep. Somehow, despite losing the first game so soundly and the second so excruciatingly, the Wolverines regrouped to finish 27-7.
Junior
Simone Froley had 20 kills,
Marcelle Rutherfurd added 13 and senior
Julia Ingoglia 12. Freshman setter
Viola Wallace had a whopping 55 assists and sophomore
Taeah Truong added a team-high 23 digs.
The Wolverines had 83 digs in the match.
Two weeks earlier, Waldorf won its initial North Coast Section Division VI title with a 25-7, 25-20, 25-10 win over Anderson Valley, which finished 27-6.
For the season, Simone Froley led the team with 180 kills, followed by
Tallulah Froley (142), Marcelle Rutherford (107) and Ingoglia (105).
The Wolverines had 279 aces on the season, led by Wallace with 62 and Simone Froley with 40. Marcelle Rutherford led the team in blocks (75), Truong in digs (226) and Wallace assists (425). Senior
Maya Silverman added 150 assists.
Truong also led the team in serve receives (264) followed by freshmen
Eliza Wolcott (175) and Tallulah Froley (162).
