2A/1A Mountain Valley recap Oct. 9, 2012
Starmount extended the longest winning streak in 2A/1A Mountain Valley this week by beating West Wilkes, 42-3. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.
Elkin and North Wilkes played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Elkin eventually emerging with a 21-20 victory.
Forbush's Bennett Winsolw and Matthew Stanley have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Winsolw has thrown for 542 yards this season, while Stanley, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 16 catches for 251 yards. Ashe County's Jonathan Cox leads the league in rushing yards with 669.
A big matchup in 2A/1A Mountain Valley this week will be when Starmount takes on the Vikings. Scott Johnson's team is currently in first, while North Wilkes is in fifth.
There should be lots of points scored when Wilkes Central and the Huskies face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Eagles comes in having scored 140 this season, while Ashe County has scored 122. Wilkes Central scored 21 points last week as it beat East Wilkes.
The Elks made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 10,040 from 10,346. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 21-20 victory over Monty Chipman's team last week.
